From Bean to Brew: Let’s Talk Coffee Grinds (Without Getting Too Fancy)
Share
If you’ve ever stood in your kitchen holding a bag of coffee thinking,
“Wait… does the grind actually matter?”
Hi 👋 it’s Britni and I promise, you’re not alone!
The short answer?
Yes… but it doesn’t have to be complicated.
Think of coffee grinds like cooking pasta, different shapes work better for different dishes. Same beans, totally different experience.
Let’s break it down in a way that actually makes sense!
1.) Cold Brew (Extra Coarse)
Texture: Chunky, like small pebbles
Best for: Cold brew (12–24 hour steep)
Why it works:
Big grounds = slow extraction = smooth, never bitter.
Pros:
- Super smooth, low acidity
- Hard to mess up
- Great for batch brewing
Cons:
- Takes time (overnight)
- Not ideal for hot coffee
Fun fact:
Cold brew often has more caffeine but tastes less acidic!
2.) French Press (Coarse)
Texture: Like sea salt
Best for: French press brewing
Why it works:
The mesh filter needs larger grounds to keep sediment out (mostly :) ).
Pros:
- Rich, full-bodied flavor
- Keeps natural oils
- Simple + cozy brewing
Cons:
- Slight grit at the bottom
- Cleanup takes a minute
3.) Metal Filter (Medium-Coarse)
Texture: Slightly smaller than French press
Best for: Reusable pour-over filters
Why it works:
Allows oils through while keeping flow steady.
Pros:
- Eco-friendly
- Fuller flavor than paper
- Reusable
Cons:
- Can get a little sediment
- Needs regular cleaning
4.) Paper Filter (Medium)
Texture: Like sand
Best for: Drip machines & pour-over
Why it works:
Paper filters trap oils for a clean, crisp cup.
Pros:
- Smooth, consistent taste
- Super beginner-friendly
- Classic “coffee shop” flavor
Cons:
- Filters out some richness
5.) Espresso (Fine)
Texture: Like sugar or flour
Best for: Espresso machines
Why it works:
Pressure brewing needs tightly packed, fine grounds.
Pros:
- Bold, concentrated flavor
- Base for lattes, mochas, americanos
- Fast brewing
Cons:
- Grind has to be precise
6.) Turkish (Extra Fine / Powder)
Texture: Powdery, like flour
Best for: Traditional Turkish coffee
Why it works:
Coffee is boiled, so ultra-fine grounds are needed.
Pros:
- Strong, intense flavor
- Unique experience
Cons:
- Grounds settle in cup
- Very bold (not for everyone)

Here’s where it really clicks..
- Coarse grinds = slower, smoother extraction
- Medium grinds = balanced, everyday coffee
- Fine grinds = bold, strong, fast extraction
Same beans… completely different experience!
